Is your child experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort or abnormal symptoms? Due to the average diet of most children this is not uncommon. Many parents or children report symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and difficulty passing stool. Some of these children can find relief through chiropractic care if the cause in a musculoskeletal or dysfunction problem that is triggering their GI symptom.

The stomach, upper and lower intestines, colon, and bladder are all innervated by T10 –L5 nerve roots and the sacrum. Chiropractors evaluate the child, and locate specific subluxations in these areas that trigger their GI issues and present with a subluxation. A adjustment is performed to remove any interference as well as the subluxation. Sometimes chiropractic care is not enough, and a nutritional component is present. This child could be suffering from a dairy, gluten, soy, nuts, egg or fish allergy. These allergies can manifest themselves with all the gastrointestinal symptoms previously listed.

It is vital that the child be tested or the families perform a food elimination diet to determine if the GI symptoms and complaints are reduced. Elimination diets are challenging for young children, but they can be done, and should be done if you suspect your child has an allergy. Many children and parents see relief of their child’s symptoms within 1 month of a strict elimination diet. A recommendation of a good probiotic should be incorporated into the child’s daily routine as well, to promote good bacteria and gut health. Incorporating Chiropractic care into this regime will aid in gastrointestinal movement and digestion and overall better functioning nervous system.
